Councillors

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has nine representatives elected by the community through the local body elections every three years (The last election was held on 13 October 2007). 

The rural constituencies of Wairoa and Central Hawke’s Bay are represented by one member each, Napier by three members and Hastings by four members.Councillors elect the Chairman at the first Council meeting following a local body election.

Councillors also chair committees and have portfolio responsibilities, where they have a watching brief and involvement in key issues.

Central Hawke's Bay Constituency

 

Councillor Tim Gilbertson.

Tim Gilbertson

Tim Gilbertson is a farmer at Patangata and has lived in the area for most of his life. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English.

Tim sees the Regional Council as both an environmental protection agency and regional strategic planner. He believes the Council should focus mainly on those two roles. A long term approach covering the whole region is vital to tie together affordable and sensible plans to deal with all major issues. These include water quality and harvesting, urban planning, regional transport, reafforestation, coastal management and preservation, renewable energy and economic development.

Hastings Constituency

 

Councillor Ewan McGregor.

Ewan McGregor

Ewan was elected to Council in October 2004 and represents the Hastings Constituency. He is a former member of the Hawke's Bay Harbour Board and former President of Hawke's Bay Federated Farmers and is currently Chairman of the Landcare Foundation and a member of the Hastings Landmark Trust. Ewan is a Hastings based business person, but has had a lifetime's experience in farming. He has won a number of farm forestry and environmental awards. Through his environmental business and voluntary conservation work he plays an active role in enhancing our living environment.

Councillor Kevin Rose JP.

Kevin Rose JP

Kevin has represented the Hastings constituency since1998. Previously an apple grower, he now runs a small horticultural block. He has had experience as a farmer, and rural Real Estate agent. Kevin is involved in many community organisations and the Presbyterian church. He was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in 1997.

Councillor Eileen von Dadelszen JP.

Eileen von Dadelszen JP

Eileen has represented the Hastings constituency since 1995. She is a graduate of Victoria and Auckland Universities, and is a Member of the New Zealand Planning Institute and the New Zealand Institute of Directors. Eileen is self-employed as a resource management consultant and is involved in governance through appointed or elected membership of a number of national and regional boards. She has extensive involvement in Hawke’s Bay organisations particularly through her family and her interest in the performing arts.

Councillor Liz Remmerswaal.

Liz Remmerswaal

Liz is a fifth generation New Zealander and a grassroots environmentalist who is thrilled to be on council. Born into the family orchard at Longlands, she trained as a journalist after university and has worked for a number of organisations, including radio.

As a founding member of the successful Cape Kidnappers Protection Society and Baywatch Environment Group, and a mother of four teenagers, she is committed to ensuring future generations inherit a good future.

 Liz sits on the Hearings, Maori and Environmental Awards committees, and is also a member of DOC’s East Coast/Hawke’s Bay Conservation Board.

Napier Constituency

 

 Councillor Alan Dick QSO.

Alan Dick QSO
Chairman

Alan represents the Napier constituency, having been elected to Council in 2004. He was Mayor of Napier for 12 years and formerly served the Regional Council in its inaugural years from 1989 to 1992. Alan has a Business Degree and is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management. He is chairman of the Hawke's Bay Lotteries Distribution Committee and is a former Director of Port of Napier and Radio New Zealand. He has broad experience in the business and community sectors.

Councillor Neil Kirton.

Neil Kirton

Neil has represented the Napier constituency since 2001. Neil has been a Member of Parliament, serving as Associate Minister of Health and Minister of Customs. He has a post-graduate degree in Science from Otago University. Neil is District Manager for Victim Support.

Councillor Christine Scott.

Christine has represented the Napier constituency since 2001. She has a degree in Psychology and post graduate papers in Education. Previously she was a schools’ consultant for a New Zealand educational publishing company. Christine has served on a number of community Trusts and chaired the Waiapu Diocesan Finance advisory group. She is currently a director of Anglican Care Ltd.

Wairoa Constituency

Councillor Fenton Wilson.

Fenton Wilson

Wairoa farmer Fenton Wilson aims to keep Wairoa’s voice prominent in Hawke’s Bay while contributing to the growth and benefiting from the vibrancy of the region as a whole.

“I want to ensure Wairoa has a strong voice on the Council and keeps its ability to get its fair share. We are part of the region, the gateway from the north, with some of the most enviable natural resources in the region – Lake Waikaremoana, Mahia Peninsula and the Wairoa River… a lot of people treasure these resources and we need to protect them.”

Born in Waipukurau and educated in Frasertown, Wairoa and Hastings, Fenton has worked most of his life in the Wairoa district. He farms a 235ha sheep and beef property with his wife Sue and their three children, in addition to being operations manager of ifarm – a total farm information resource business based in Hawke’s Bay.

Fenton’s past roles include national shearing Instructor, drought recovery coordinator, an Emergency Management Officer with the Wairoa District Council and a facilitator for local government projects. He is chairman of the Wairoa Community Development Trust, past chairman of the Eastern District Council of the Royal Agricultural Society, immediate past-president of the Wairoa A&P Society. He is currently on the Smedley Station advisory board and treasurer for the Frasertown Primary School Board of Trustees.
