2003 Environmental Award Winners

Pukehou School - Ede Award for "education to the power of the environment"

For their strong commitment in developing an environmental educational programme. This is managed by an environmental committee of year 7 and 8 students, who were at the ceremony to receive their award.

John Scott - Individual award

For his active involvement in promoting the environmental enhancement of the Maraetotara Stream. Although the project has a long way to go, John has galvanised action quickly and effectively, involving landowners, councils, schools and environmental groups in sharing his vision for a substantially improved waterway.

Ewan McGregor - Rural Award

For his long-term commitment and passion for sustainable farming and silviculture, and his influence on the farming community through his promotion of environmentally sustainable farming and farm forestry practices.

Thermal Options Ltd and the Vapor Jet system - Cleaner Production Award

For equipment and a system that uses steam to treat plant diseases and condition the soil, and significantly reduce the need for agrichemical sprays for both conventional and organic crop growers.

Floor*Store by Alternative Heating Ltd - New Product Award

For an environmentally positive heating system for new homes that uses natural, passive heat and eliminates the need for additional oil, gas or electrical heating.

The Hawke's Bay Expressway Partnering Group - Business Award

For the planning and construction of a section of motorway through a sensitive wetland area. This group represents residents and environmental groups, councils and firms involved with the construction and worked together to ensure the environmental impact of the project was minimised.

No award was able to be made in the Community category in 2003

Five Highly Commended certificates were also presented to encourage some of the applicants to continue and develop their projects:

David & Ngaire Bryant, Hastings for the sustainable management and protection of their farmland

New Product
Clean Earth Ltd, Napier, for a household green waste service that solves residents garden waste problems and reduces the pressure on landfills.
