“These awards are a great way to recognise some great people in Hawke’s Bay – individuals, companies and groups - who are working to make a positive difference to the quality of our environment,” says the Chairman of the joint working group, Cr Dave Pipe (Napier).
Kids 4 Drama
This fun and engaging troupe of actors and singers (all still at school) is touring Hawke's Bay schools with their new show on environmental topics. They will present a short show at the Awards for everyone to learn from ... and enjoy!
Guest Speaker
Susan Krumdieck is gathering a reputation in New Zealand for being an entertaining, challenging and motivating speaker. This dynamic woman is associate professor of mechanical engineering at University of Canterbury and is involved in projects to consider routes to evolving, sustainable energy technologies - something that needs to engage us all in the future! We are very fortunate to have Susan in Hawke's Bay and she will make the most of her time - as well as guest speaker for the Environmental Awards, she has a few other speaking engagements in the region so don't miss her.

Recycled emblem for the awards – May 09
For some time we have been looking for an emblem and fresh design for the Hawke’s Bay Environmental Awards, only to find we had the basis of a really great one already! The green Wipe Out Waste logo has been recolored for the Awards scheme – which is another great joint council initiative. Reusing is not only an ethic we like in awards entrants! We will be looking to make a version of this available for past winners (with the year of their win) in the near future, so let us know if you could make use of this.
Business category change – May 09
We have merged two business focused categories to create a new ‘Business resource efficiency’ category. The separate categories for ‘business/commercial/industry’ and for ‘cleaner production’ have naturally come together as more businesses are now operating in this space. All businesses and industry in Hawke's Bay which have a programme achieving resource efficiency, minimising waste or preventing pollution or has a project with a wider benefit for the environment (eg, planting, education) may apply under this category. A ‘whole business’ approach is not essential – a business may have one project that is a leading example.
Rural category for Lifestyle Blocks too
We have been asked to consider creating a separate category for lifestyle blocks, but rather than add more categories, the judges will fairly consider lifestyle blocks in the ‘rural’ category. The winner of this category isn’t always a whole, huge farm – specific sustainable farm projects or well-managed lifestyle block properties are just as likely to be winners. And as farm entrants have been down in recent years, it could be a good time for established smaller blocks to enter!
The closing date each year for the Awards is 15 July. Applications and nominations must be lodged with Hawke's Bay Regional Council, or your local Council (marked attention Environmental Awards).
You can apply yourself, for your own organisation, service or product.
OR
You can nominate someone else you think deserves recognition for environmentally sustainable work.
The work might be big or small, completed or well underway, or a part of a larger work. Entering offers you a great way of documenting your progress, getting input and direction, and networking with other people working in environmental care.
The category winners are presented with an award art piece designed by Julia Godfree, a Havelock North sculptor and artists. The pieces are made from Oamaru stone with a glass inset of a different colour each year.
Winners also receive a certificate and a small grant to encourage them to continue their valuable work. We present Highly Commended recipients with a framed certificate.

You can apply yourself, for your own organisation, service or product, or you can nominate someone else you think deserves recognition for environmentally sustainable work. The project might be big or small, completed or well underway, or a part of a larger work – they simply must be within the Hawke’s Bay region. And if it’s not finished, your project may benefit from coming under the spotlight in the awards process, as it’s a good way for your to track your progress and get input from other people.
