The Great View Walk

TIME  -  Fit 1 hour Rambling 2 hours

This walk takes you to the heights where there are great views to all the horizons.

  1. Start the walk from the gate on the northern side of the camping ground.  Walk up the track following the track markers.
  2. Look at the 3.5 ha of native plantings in the right side gully.  These were planted from 2000 by Forest & Bird, conservation week children and Greenmeadows Rotary volunteers.  Weed control and under planting are now happening.
  3. Walk on up the track to the top then go to the right.  Enjoy the views BUT keep away from the cliff edges.
  4. Walking down the track is through private land.  The area is regenerating with kanuka scrub now forming continuous cover in places.
  5. At the bottom, walk back along the track past Lake Waikopiro to the gate.  At the gate go up the hill past the old Maori house sites and pits.

    or
  6. Walk along the cut track around the ridge and down to the camping ground.  Poplars have been planted to reduce the risk of soil slipping.  When pruned they provide excellent drought fodder for the sheep.
  7. The track down to the camping ground passes through an arboretum of exotic trees planted by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council staff volunteers in 1999.
