TIME Fit 30 minutes Rambling 1 hour
This walk goes through an area of native regeneration which has been extensively replanted since being fenced in 2000. Plantings have been made by schools during conservations weeks, Forest & Bird volunteers and Greenmeadow’s Rotary Club.
- Start the walk from the gate on the north, rear side of the camping area. Walk up the track past exotic trees which have been planted since 1998 to protect the slope from erosion.
- Take the track to the right on the far side of the flat area past Himalayan Oaks and through the small gate into the Kauris native area.
Note: The range of native plants (can you see the kauri?)
The amount of blackberry - this is now being controlled.
- Turn right over the fence and walk down to the stream and back to the camping ground.
- Passing along the stream note the new fences and the riparian plantings. The stream has been retired, the willows have been removed and school groups have planted the riparian areas over several years during conservation week.
- The native plantings at the head of the camping ground were planted in 1999. The area is designed to trap sediment from upslope during major storms.
