The Enviroschools Programme delivers environmental and educational benefits. It takes a “whole school” approach which involves students in planning, designing and taking action to create a sustainable school environment.
The Enviroschools Foundation comprises a governing trust board and national management team. Their role involves strategic planning, building and maintaining a network of partnerships, and providing core support services to regions including programme development, resources, and professional development. The Enviroschools Foundation mission is to empower children and young people to make decisions and take action for a healthy, peaceful and more sustainable world.
Enviroschools is implemented on a regional basis, along regional council boundaries. Enviroschools Regional Coordinators and Facilitators are employed by local agencies, principally Councils. Their purpose is to support the creation of sustainable schools where the school grounds, operation, management and curriculum are all part of the sustainability process. Enviroschools are committed to a future where schools are able to provide students with rich learning opportunities through strong connections with their land and the full diversity of their communities. The Enviroschools vision is, To foster a generation of innovative and motivated young people who instinctively think and act sustainably.
Enviroschools originated in Hamilton in 1993 and is now available nation-wide with a network of more than 340 schools (15% of all New Zealand schools). It is supported by the Enviroschools Foundation and a growing number of national and regional partnerships. In Hawke’s Bay, the scheme is supported by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Wipe out Waste and the College of Education – Massey University.
We currently have 23 registered Enviroschools within the Hawke’s Bay Region. These schools are at a wide variety practice levels within the programme.

Girvan is working with Nelson Park, Taradale Primary, Eskdale, Napier Girls High, Waimarama, Hastings Intermediate and Rissington. We have 2 other facilitators, Christine Morrison, EfS Advisor for Massey University and Emily Rockwell, Environmental Education Advisor for Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.
Hawke’s Bay Enviroschools Regional Coordinator is Emily Rockwell. If you would like to know more about the Enviroschools programme, please contact her on (06) 833 8036 or emily@hbrc.govt.nz or check out the Enviroschools website www.enviroschools.org.nz
