The Enviroschools Programme delivers environmental and educational benefits. It takes a “whole school” approach which involves students in planning, designing and taking action to create a sustainable school environment.
The Enviroschools Foundation comprises a governing trust board and national management team. Their role involves strategic planning, building and maintaining a network of partnerships, and providing core support services to regions including programme development, resources, and professional development. The Enviroschools Foundation mission is to empower children and young people to make decisions and take action for a healthy, peaceful and more sustainable world.
Enviroschools is implemented on a regional basis, along regional council boundaries. Enviroschools Regional Coordinators and Facilitators are employed by local agencies, principally Councils. Their purpose is to support the creation of sustainable schools where the school grounds, operation, management and curriculum are all part of the sustainability process. Enviroschools are committed to a future where schools are able to provide students with rich learning opportunities through strong connections with their land and the full diversity of their communities. The Enviroschools vision is, To foster a generation of innovative and motivated young people who instinctively think and act sustainably.
Enviroschools originated in Hamilton in 1993 and is now available nation-wide with a network of more than 25% of all New Zealand schools. It is supported by the Enviroschools Foundation and a growing number of national and regional partnerships. In Hawke’s Bay, the scheme is supported by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and the Nina Brathwaite Trust.
“The purpose of the Nina Brathwaite Trust is for the advancement of education of local Hawke’s Bay children so as to provide them with an improved and healthier learning environment and an opportunity for achieving and understanding in all aspects of preservation, conservation and protection of natural resources in the Hawke’s Bay area in the interests of the community.” – Stuart Roper, Trustee
As an Enviroschool, your students could be actively engaged in some of these wonderful activities!

We currently have 29 Enviroschools within Hawke’s Bay. These schools are at a wide variety practice levels within the programme. We use Enviroschools facilitators to work with Hawke's Bay schools.

If your school is interested in making a whole school, long term commitment to sustainable behaviour and student driven learning, download the Proposal to become an Enviroschool (Registration of Interest) and have a look at the Sample Enviroschools Agreement. Send your registration of interest form to Enviroschools Coordinator, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Private Bag 6006, Napier. Due to available funding, spaces are limited. Once your registration of interest has been received, your school will be contacted with more details.
These have been planned for each month of the school year. The aim of these informative meetings is to provide the space and time to discuss issues that are important and relevant for all Enviroschools. It is really useful for teachers from various Enviroschools to network and learn from each other. Please feel free to bring students, BOT, principal or parents with you to these workshops.
Different schools host the workshops throughout the year. We meet from 3.30-5 pm with coffee, tea and a light snack provided. If you would like to know the current schedule for Cluster workshops or are interested in hosting, please contact the Enviroschools Coordinator.
