Information on Request

Provide information to teachers and students on request e.g. animal/plant pests, coast, groundwater, land use, planting, rainfall, rivers and water quality. Lunchbox The Lunchbox is a quarterly newsletter for teachers and environmental educators, Lunchbox is mailed to all schools in Hawke’s Bay. It provides information on resources, local/national programmes, environmental events and professional development opportunities.

Action-Reaction Kit

An Emergency Management/ Civil Defence resource on natural hazards (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, tsunami) with classroom activities. Aimed at Levels 2-4.

Environment Topics

Environment Topics are a series of information sheets on land management practices, resource management and animal and plant pest identification and control. Produced as fact sheets for downloading there is a wide range of topics, which include best practice, rules and issues. Ideally suited to Levels 4-8. The Estuaries Kit This resource highlights the ecology of an estuary and some of the effects of human impact and urban development. It includes a local component compiled by Hawke's Bay Regional Council. Aimed at Levels 5-8.

Hills 2 Ocean Kit

A water quality and quantity issues resource with classroom activities and background information on Hawke's Bay water sources, cultural aspects and history. Aimed at Levels 3-5, but adaptable.

SHMAK (stream health monitoring assessment kit)

This kit is available on loan and enables students to measure stream health and identify macroinvertebrates. National Waterways Project Facilitators are available to assist schools with stream monitoring. For more information contact Ian Cairns, ph (06) 844 3384 or email Ian Cairns.

Waste Minimisation

Wipe Out Waste is the brand for the Regions Waste Minimisation Office. Wipe Out Waste offers a range of educational materials and guided tours for schools. Also if your school or class has a school waste project, Wipe Out Waste can help. FREE OF CHARGE: educational booklets, teacher workshops, class talks, recycling systems, waste audits of your school, worm farming and composting information and assistance, guided tours of Transfer Stations and Omarunui Landfill. Teacher Training Workshops

Curriculum linked workshops are held each year to encourage teacher learning in environmental education.

The Faraday Centre

This is the Hawke’s Bay’s East Coast Science Centre and Museum of Technology and a past Hawke’s Bay Environmental Award winner. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council funds a display annually at this interactive and fun science centre. Contact The Faraday Centre, 1 Faraday Street, Napier.
