ReGeneration Youth Jam 2011

Up to 3 students from each Hawke’s Bay High School are invited to join young leaders from around New Zealand for 2 days of workshops, skills, action planning and fun. The Hawke’s Bay Youth Jam is being run as part of the 2011 ReGeneration Roadtrip. We are looking for motivated young people who are willing to step up, represent and take positive action in their region to another level. So if you’re keen to get more active in your local school, community or region then come along and get involved!

The Jam is designed to bring young people from around Hawke's Bay together so that they can share information, connections and collaborate on projects in the year ahead. Participants can expect to take away new skills, contacts and a better understanding of complex local and global issues. Practical outcomes from the event will be personal and group action plans for projects in your schools and communities in 2011. Participants will also be invited to participate in the next big ReGeneration national event in February 2012.

Cost: $20 per student (includes meals, accommodation and workshops)

Getting there: EIT campus, Gloucester Street, Taradale Napier. Once on campus, turn right at the first round-a-bout and the Marae is the first building on your right. Please be sure to arrive by 9am on Friday.

The programme is based on a series of interactive workshops that bring together a great range of life experiences, important issues and practical skills that the presenters have learned through their own unique experiences. Participants will choose which workshops best fit their needs.

Previous Youth Events

The annual Sir Peter Blake Youth Environment Forum allows young people to focus on New Zealand's regional and national environmental concerns.   Check out the Ministry for the Environment  or Sir Peter Blake Trust websites for more information. Many students from around Hawke's Bay have been selected to represent Hawke's Bay at the Sir Peter Blake Youth Enviroleaders forum over the years!

2007 delegates were Laura Lincoln from Karamu High, Shannen Howard and Annie Galland from Napier Girls High.

The delegates in 2008 were Aseel Bahho from Taradale High School, Laura Lincoln from Karamu High and Megan Hunt from Central Hawke’s Bay College.

In 2009, delegates included Victoria Tatam from Iona College, Katie Jenessen from Sacred Heart College and Ngawai Huriwai from St Joseph's Maori Girls College.

2010 student delegates included Laura Rolls from Napier Girls High, Sarah Hutana-TeAho from St Josephs Maori Girls College and Ben Roberts from Havelock North High School.

2011 student delegates included Christina Gray from William Colenso College, Jenni Coulson from Taradale High, Emily Aitken from Woodford House and Faith Dornan from Tamatea High School.

2009 was the first year the Regional event was overnight, and it was a HUGE success!  The HB Youth Environment Council invited 3 students from each of the high schools throughout the region. The event was hosted at Riverbend Camp in Havelock North.

The 2 days gave students the opportunity to discuss, debate and become actively involved in a variety of hands on projects including learning how to make stencils to get their message across.  Some of the focus groups that the students got involved with were taking a trip to Trelinnoe Farm to talk about Climate Change issues, learn how to use a kiwi tracker device, make junk into funky new usable materials, get their hands dirty making a worm farm and bokashi system, learn about sustainable clothing and fashion, tested the health of the local stream and made a solar oven!
