Sir Peter Blake Youth Environment Forum 2010

11-15 April 2010

The environment - are you passionate about it?  Do you make an active contribution? Are you a leader?

Join 40 other like-minded youth from around the country for 4 days of field trips, workshops and hands on activities.  It all happens in Wellington and finishes with a presentation of your projects to invited guests at Parliament Building’s Grand Hall!

In 2009, Hawke's Bay Regional Council hosted three young people aged 15-18 to represent the region.  All travel, food and accommodation were fully funded.

This year we will be sending up to 6 students and 1 adult to this prestigious event.

The Ministry for the Environment runs this event in partnership with the Sir Peter Blake Trust and the travel, food and accommodation are fully sponsored. For the students, the top 2 applicants will be guaranteed acceptance, while the 4 runner up applicants will be submitted to a national pool for judging.

Students need to be aged 15-18, involved in their school and/or community, passionate about, and want to make an active contribution to the environment. If you have any questions about this event or the selection process please email Emily@hbrc.govt.nz.

Applications closed Friday 26 February 2010 at 5:00 pm.

This annual event allows young people to focus on New Zealand's regional and national environmental concerns.   Check out the Ministry for the Environment  or Sir Peter Blake Trust websites for more information.

Hawke's Bay Regional Youth Environment Forum 2009

Hawke’s Bay Youth Environment Council invite 3 students (year 10 – 13) from each of the 23 high schools throughout the region to attend this event Friday 1 May – Saturday 2 May at Riverbend Camp in Havelock North.

This was the first year the event was overnight, and it was a HUGE success!

The 2 days gave students the opportunity to discuss, debate and become actively involved in a variety of hands on projects including learning how to make stencils to get their message across.  Some of the focus groups that the students got involved with were taking a trip to Trelinnoe Farm to talk about Climate Change issues, learn how to use a kiwi tracker device, make junk into funky new usable materials, get their hands dirty making a worm farm and bokashi system, learn about sustainable clothing and fashion, tested the health of the local stream and made a solar oven!

The keynote speaker is was Dominic Salmon, Waste Minimisation Officer from Hastings District Council.

The day was facilitated by the Regional Youth Environment Council, local experts and HBRC staff.  The Youth Environment Council is a group of committed high school students, meet on a simi-regular basis to plan events and promote environmental education to their peers.  They work on the principle that environmental education is best achieved when actions take place in, about and for the environment.  The group is supported by Hawke's Bay Regional Council’s Environmental Education Advisor, Emily Rockwell.

If you’re interested in attending this event next year please speak to your Principal or contact Emily by email or phone (06) 833 8036 for more information.
