Hawke's Bay Regional Council is moving onto the next stages of the Te Karamu project, enhancing the stream near Havelock North and its surroundings.
The initial plantings have had a tumultuous year, first with droughts, then flooding and finally a weedy assault over summer. However Stage 1 looks promising, with good plant survival rates and new growth.
Stage 2 downstream of Crosses Road Bridge (1km of the right bank) is due to begin early this year. Regional Council staff have already removed some undesirable trees from the area and will begin earthworks in February to stabilise bank areas and realign the Karituwhenua Stream. Ground preparation will then be done in April for planting to begin in May.
"We will be arranging some public planting days in May and anyone interested in getting involved should look for advertisements in local papers and on the Council's website," says Council's Engineering Planner, Lisa McGlinchey.
"We are also keen for any schools, community groups or businesses who might like to adopt a section of the Karamu Stream to get in contact with us and register their interest."
People keen to be involved in the project can view further information at www.hbrc.govt.nz (keywords: karamu enhancement) or register their interest by contacting Lisa McGlinchey on (06) 833 8084 or emailing details to karamu@hbrc.govt.nz |
