Environmental Officer – Field Pollution Response

Are you interested in taking an active role safeguarding the environment?

Do you have strong interpersonal skills and don’t mind making tough decisions?

We are seeking a versatile person to join us as an Environmental Officer. This position involves dealing with pollution incidents and other reported unauthorised activities affecting the environment.  The majority of the work is based on educating resource users, but possible outcomes include prosecution of offenders, the issue of infringement fines, the issue of abatement notices, education. The role includes an after-hours on call component of one week on call every six weeks. 

An understanding of relevant environmental issues that affect the Hawke’s Bay region would be beneficial but not necessary. Of utmost importance is an ability to effectively deal with conflict and not to be afraid of making tough decisions that might result in taking both punitive and deterrent based enforcement action offending parties.   The position will appeal to persons with an enforcement background with the additional benefit of having an environmental focus. The position might also suit a recent University graduate wishing to begin a career in the environmental sector.

The successful person should have an ability to establish effective relationships with a wide range of people and organisations.    Effective all round communication skills and the ability to manage appropriate computer based applications are also desired attributes.
