Pekapeka Wetland Project
The Pekapeka Wetland project is progressing well. School children have planted over 1500 trees at the southern end this winter. Birdlife is flourishing and on cue with spring the first clutches of ducklings and signets (baby swans) have been sighted in recent weeks. The interpretation area is going to provide a great platform from which to view the wildlife that abounds within this wetland. The development of the site continues, the area has been stripped and landscaped, the carpark is being laid and work is soon to commence on forming tracks. There is still a way to go though, with the planting of the area next winter and boardwalks and bridges to build. The interpretation area will be completely outdoors and display panels on wetland ecology, rehabilitation of the Pekapeka wetland and the history of Pekapeka for Maori and European including settlement, road, rail and agriculture.
