Doug Campbell Commemorative Seat
Noel Sutherland enjoys the view over Tutira Country Park from the bench seat that commemorates the first Chief Soil Conservator of New Zealand, Douglas Campbell. Doug Campbell was a teacher at Napier Boys High School from 1936-44 and saw the damage done by the Kopuawhara Flood and Esk Valley Floods due to removal of bush in the hill country. He successfully campaigned Parliament to introduce laws to introduce soil conservation. The commemorative seat has been funded by donations from Mr Sutherland and Stafford Ball, both former colleagues of Doug Campbell.
