Oxidation Ponds Hearing Adjourned

Media Release 13 May 2009
Oxidation Ponds Hearing Adjourned

The hearing of the resource consents for the Porangahau and Te Paerahi oxidation ponds has been adjourned at the request of the applicant, Central HB District Council, and submitter Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated represented by Ngati Kere and Ngati Manuhiri.

|The hearing last week was for the replacement of resource consents held by the District Council to discharge effluent to land and to water at Porangahau and to land at Te Paerahi, plus the associated air discharge consents.

The decision to adjourn was made to allow the two parties to discuss the issue of iwi contribution to participatory decision making and to reach a level of confidence on future processes.
Both parties asked that the discussion meetings be mediated by Commissioner Rauru Kirikiri without prejudice.  This role will not affect the Commissioner’s ability to remain on the Hearing Panel.

The hearing of all other evidence has been completed.  Any further information received as a result of the discussions will be circulated to all submitters for comment before the hearing is reconvened.  A decision will subsequently be made on the consent applications.
