The Wharerangi-Turirau Flood Control and Drainage Scheme proposed by Hawke's Bay Regional Council will not go ahead as a result of the wishes of the majority of landowners in the catchment.
On Friday 12 June, a Regional Council hearings committee Chaired by Cr Kevin Rose with Crs McGregor and von Dadelszen considered a number of submissions from the community (in the vicinity of Puketapu/Puketitiri Road intersection).
“It was clear from the tenor of the submissions that Council didn’t have enough support in the community to continue with the proposal,” said Cr Rose.
The Council will write to the landowners in the catchment to explain the decision.
However the process has been useful for the community in providing an opportunity to discuss flooding and drainage issues in the area. Council will work with small groups of landowners who are keen to improve drainage on their properties.
“By working with small groups of landowners, we hope that we can reduce some of their flooding problems,” Said Cr Rose.
“However, the community still has every opportunity in the future to approach Council and ask for a scheme to be put in place.” |
