Clifton Funding from Regional Council

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council will contribute up to $50,000 towards cleaning up concrete and steel reinforcing rubble on Clifton Beach.

Council’s Operations Group staff have assessed a number of removal and disposal options, particularly looking for clean fill opportunities with current construction projects around the area.

Council has agreed that the rubble be cleared and Councillors preference was for the material to be re-used in a practical way.  The clean fill will be used to fill a small gully at a neighbouring farm and to improve a farm track and access to another part of the farm.

The material was put in front of the camp site many years ago to provide protection, but in recent years, storms have scattered the concrete and steel fill on the beach.

“There is danger to people using the beach from sharp steel reinforcing that is in the surf zone.  This is the worst part of the Hawke’s Bay coastline for erosion and rubble hazards, and the Council needs to pay it some attention and help this return to a natural coastline,” said Mike Adye, Group Manager Asset Management.

Council’s Open Spaces funding will be used for the project which will restore the beach to a more natural state and provide better access to Cape Kidnappers.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and Hastings District Council are continuing to investigate structures along this area of the coast which are built without necessary consents or permits and are not structurally sound so pose future safety hazards.
