Taharua/Mohaka Strategy Agreed

Yesterday (Wed 11 Nov) Hawke’s Bay Regional Council took another step towards addressing water quality issues in the upper Mohaka and Taharua Rivers with the adoption of the Taharua Strategy.

This strategy sets out an approach, key steps and timeframes for action, and has been endorsed by Council’s Environmental Management Committee before formal adoption at a Regional Council meeting later this month.

The Strategy sets out a plan for developing effective, long-term solutions.  It also puts a strong emphasis on working in partnership and identifying future risks.

Key milestones will include the setting of environmental targets in mid-2010 and notification of a draft plan change in mid-2011.  These timescales may need to be adjusted, depending on the outcomes of the science investigation.

The newly formed Taharua Stakeholder Group will play a key role in helping develop management objectives, environmental targets and then a policy framework.

“The strategy is a great start”, said Iain Maxwell, Hawke’s Bay Fish and Game, “It’s fantastic to see this continued momentum from the Regional Council.  Fish and Game will be fully supporting the ongoing development of the programme”.

In line with the strategy, Taharua landowners and Council staff are working together to further improve farm nutrient management, which can provide environmental and financial benefits.  Positive work has already taken place, and a range of additional opportunities will be considered.
