Free Family Picnic at Pakowhai Country Park

A free family picnic will be held at Pakowhai Country Park on Sunday 29 November, 11am – 2pm. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is holding the event at their country park near Hastings so that more people can explore the park close to the cities and enjoy the country atmosphere. People can bring their own picnic and there will be a treasure hunt, face painting and bouncy castle for the children, live music, and a dog agility display.  As usual people can enjoy walks through the park and play games in the open spaces.   Pakowhai is a popular dog-friendly area  –  however, visiting pooches will need to be kept on a lead during the picnic. Regional Council staff will be on hand to talk about the park, its history and some of the new developments that may happen there.   There is also plenty of space for games and additional parking.  The park was developed following a large flood protection project on the Ngaruroro River in the late 1960s, leaving the Raupere Stream to flow gently through the tree-lined area that is Pakowhai Country Park today.  The park was created by The Landcare Foundation, with support from a group known as Friends of Pakowhai Country Park.  The ‘Friends’ still play an important part in planting and other projects at the park which is now owned and managed by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.  Newer developments include a wetland at the rear of the property.
