Nursery Catalogue - Planting for Erosion Control

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council maintains a plant nursery to provide reasonably priced willow and poplar poles so that farmers can advance their erosion control and soil management goals.  Poles and cuttings are for sale from March/April in time for the winter planting season.

The willow and poplar species have been selected especially to suit Hawke’s Bay farm conditions for erosion control, shelter belts, livestock shade, drought fodder and timber (poplars).

Order Form

Willows and Poplars 2011 - Nursery Catalogue, PDF File - 1.73Mb  2012 order form to come, but please print off and use order form if convenient, & note product and price changes below.

Willows

Willows need moist soil conditions through summer to grow well. In the drier parts of Hawke's Bay they should be planted in the dampest sites, but in wetter districts they are highly versatile.

  • Matsudana (The original parent clone)  Fast growing tree with rough bark suitable for most types of farm planting. A higher resistance to drought and goat damage compared to other clones. Attractive foliage. Colour code white.
  • Moutere (Matsudana X alba) Very fast growth, good for shelter belts, multi-purpose clone. Colour code Blue/purple.
  • Tangoio (Matsudana X alba)  Very fast growth, some drought tolerance, very good shelter belt tree, highest leaf protein of the willows. Colour code blue/blue.

Poplars

Poplars have similar siting requirements to willows. Poplars normally have a single straight leader and only start to spread at maturity.

  • Crows Nest  Fast growth, narrow form similar to Lombardy poplar. More tolerant than most varieties of drier seasons and strong winds.  Colour code yellow/red.
  • Fraser Moderately hardy and reliable on upper slopes.  Good form and slower growth. Colour orange/blue.
  • Kawa  Fast growth, attractive foliage, late leaf fall, some possum resistance. Timber potential.  Colour code yellow/black.
  • Otahuao  Moderately hardy. Slower growing but wind tolerant. Good form.  Colour code orange/grey.
  • Veronese  Slightly more drought tolerant than other poplars. Vigorous growth, suitable for timber and shelter belts. Can show signs of rust disease in high rainfall areas with no apparent effect.  Colour code yellow/grey.
  • Yunnanensis  Attractive shiny leaves, late leaf fall, possum resistant, tends to branch heavily.  Colour code black.

Environment Topic information sheets with details on most species are available on request.

Quality Commitment - Nursery management take care to ensure that plant material is of the highest quality and is correctly identified. However, this is not a guarantee of the strike rate or growth rate of materials supplied.

Pole Storage - Poles should be soaked for up to two weeks before planting. Stand 3m poles with the butt end 20-40cm deep in fresh water.

Planting Guide - A detailed pole planting guide is available from our staff. It contains advice about siting, planting and management of poles.

Regulations - Before planting, check regulations controlling the distance of trees from community drains (Regional Council) and power wires (Electricity Authority). District Council plans regulate how close trees may be planted to property boundaries.

ORDER EARLY

Orders received early are more likely to be filled, and priority will be given to orders for erosion control purposes. If unable to supply from our nursery, we will try to obtain material from other sources. The first poles will be available for delivery in early June.

For more information contact Land Management Adviser or the Regional Council.

DELIVERY

HBRC can deliver your poles if the quantity, timing with neighbours and location suits - 3m poles $0.80each, 2.5m poles $0.60each.

Pole Protectors

For best results in cattle grazed areas, plant only 3 metre poles and remove cattle for 1-2 years. Protectors guard against browse damage only.

Available from our nursery are –

  • Netting Sleeves Plastic UV resistant netting guards available in 1.1m (sheep size) and 1.7m (cattle size). Must be stapled at top and bottom ends.
  • Dynex ‘Pole Protector’ Plastic UV stabilised guard with a 3-4 year life which gives increased protection from sheep, cattle and goat browsing. A complete tube with built-in air holes and tear line. No need to staple to poles. Available in 1.7m lengths.

Recycle your Pole Protectors!
FREE recycling for Dynex “Pole Protectors” is now available at the Regional Council Nursery from 3RGroup Ltd.
How it works:
• Remove foreign material - clips, bands, ties, etc
• Shake free of organic contamination - weeds, dirt, etc.
• Drop protectors in the black Agrecovery bin
Please do not place any other plastic protectors or sleeves in the bin as this will contaminate the plastic. Removing organic matter and foreign material also helps effective recycling.
