Poorly to very poorly drained, oxygen limitations are high and colour is greyish.
Old Soil Group classificationGley or Glyed Recent.
Common names associated with this Soil OrderAhuriri, Awamate, Makauri, Pukehou, Okawa, Raumati, Hastings, Kaiapo, Irongate, Willowbrook, Taniwha, Te Awa, Otane, Moteo, Meeanee.
Physical characteristics
  • Strongly affected by waterlogging, have been chemically reduced.
  • Located where watertable is seasonally high, or where drainage is impeded by a pan.
  • Colluvial sites could be included in this group. Eroded soil from slopes deposited on top of existing soils in the footslope area with humps and hollows.
  • High clay content ranging from 20-80%.
  • Organic matter levels usually high.
  • Highly anaerobic - low areation.
