Soil Properties

Parent material Water deposit (alluvium) of Tutaekuri from greywacke and/or sandstone on lagoon deposits
Characteristic site and soil features low lying areas on margins of old lagoon which was covered by water in floods and high tides before the 1931 earthquake; silty and clayey alluvium on shelly  lagoon sediments
Associated soils not shown within map unit at map scale but separated out in more detailed maps. - Sample Location 23, 24, 25

Natural drainage and depth to gley and hence to water table after wet periods 26      poor - <30cm
27      very poor to poor - 0-30
Potential rooting depth, texture, and limiting layer 26      >45cm silt loam on shelly sandy loam
27      30-45cm clay loam on shelly silt loam
Available water capacity 26      75-100mm
27      35-50mm
Infiltration rate

26      moderate
27      slow

Permeability rate 26,27 slow
Susceptibility of topsoil to pugging and compaction when wet 26      very high
27      extremely high
Unfavourable soil characteristics 26      slowly permeable lagoon sediments free lime,
           high pH (alkaline)
           saline
27      as above but heavy topsoil easily compacted and
difficult to manage in wet conditions
          slow infiltration
shallow clay loam to shelly sediment

Soil Management

Artificial drainage: drain spacing 26, 27
10 - 20m
Cultivate when moist to avoid: compaction 26, 27
Irrigation:-

Recommended method
application rate
Dripper spacing for continuous wetted strip
Amount and frequency
26, 27   sprinkler to prevent waterlogging
27          slow <4mm/hr if 4 l/hr drippers used
26          60cm
27          70cm27 little (15-25mm), often to prevent
              waterlogging
