Animal Pests

Welcome to the Hawke's Bay Regional Council's website pages on animal pests in Hawke's Bay.

Animal pests have a significant and adverse effect on the region's pasture, bush, and water quality and consequently on human health and the regional economy.

The animal pests directly managed by the Regional Council are possums, rabbits and hares, and rooks.  Feral goats, deer, pigs, mustelids, cats and rats are also controlled where site-specific.  Advisory services are provided on other animal pests, including Argentine ants.

The Animal Pest Advisory Team is responsible for the day to day management of the Council's animal pest self help programme and site specific control animals.

The team also manages HuB or Hawke's Bay urban biodiversity programmes, to reduce pests and increase the range of native bird and plant species in our urban areas.  The first HuB programme was trialled on Napier Hill in early 2009 and has been successful in reducing possum and rat populations and increasing birds and plant health in the suburb.  The next HuB programme begins in 2010 on the outskirts of Havelock North.
