Strategic Goals

Strategic Goals banner.

Welcome to Hawke's Bay Regional Council website pages on its strategic goals for both the Council and the region.

The Regional Council has identified some of the key issues facing the region.  These are presented as 14 draft goals in a booklet – Embracing Futures Thinking.  These goals provide a focus for regional council activities over the next three years.  Councillors have portfolios that reflect these goals.

A series of breakfast speaker events is being held in Hawke’s Bay to encourage fresh thinking and discussion.  Meetings with key sectors of our community are also being held to stimulate discussion and action.

What are the strategic goals?

Hawke's Bay Regional Council has identified some of the key issues facing Hawke’s Bay region.  These are presented as 14 draft goals in the booklet – Embracing Futures Thinking.   Some of these goals are focused on natural resource issues such as water, land use change and climate change.  Others are based on how the regional council needs to operate in this fast-changing world.

The 14 draft goals are:

  • Sustainability
  • Water Futures
  • Land Use Change
  • Climate Change
  • Renewable Energy
  • Future Regional Infrastructure
  • Open Space
  • Economic Development
  • Regional Futures Scenarios
  • Regional Leadership
  • Partnerships with Maori
  • Investment
  • Operational Activities
  • Organisational Competency

“These will form the basis for discussions over the next year or so.  They are signposts to help us move forward.  They will evolve as our understanding of the issues develop - both through these discussions and through keeping up-to-date on national and international debate.  In the meantime these goals provide a focus for regional council activities over the next three years.  They signal what is important to the Council and indicate where our energies and resources will be put.” – Chairman Rex McIntyre, opening address to the Embracing Futures Thinking speaker series, 15 May 2008
