Rainfall patterns during the 2007 calendar year were characterised by a five month dry period from January to June, during which drought conditions developed. Rainfall amounts during this period were approximately 45% of their normal total across the region. Severe conditions developed in parts of southern Hawke’s Bay, with areas receiving only 25% of normal rainfall. The wettest parts of the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges only received approximately 65% of normal rainfall during this period.
For the year as a whole, rainfall was 18% less than average across the region. Parts of the Ruahine Ranges and Waikaremoana received above average rainfall.
