Well Information

Welcome to the Hawke's Bay Regional Council webpage providing information on wells. Aquifers and groundwater are essential to the economy and wellbeing of Hawke's Bay. The Council manages about 2280 resource consents for groundwater takes but there are hundreds more bores for domestic and stock water that the Council does not administer.

More and more people in Hawke’s Bay are using groundwater because there is less river water available in summer when water is most needed. Aquifer water is also extremely high quality compared to river water. The main aquifers being under the Heretaunga Plains and the Ruataniwha Plains.

Who is responsible for groundwater in Hawke’s Bay?

Hawke's Bay Regional Council:

Manages the aquifers as a resource to ensure long term water availability. It grants drilling and pumping permits and maintains legal records (consents).

Well owners:

Manage their own wells and are responsible for maintenance, well depth and ensuring an appropriate design used for screens, pumps and other equipment.

Drillers acting on behalf of well owners:

Are responsible for the manner in which the well is drilled into the aquifer, that the well is completed using appropriate equipment (screen, pump etc.) and for the maintenance of the well's viability.

Council publications providing information on wells

You may have existing wells on your property or be planning to drill a new bore. Our aquifer scientist has prepared some publications to help you maintain or plan your well:

  • Before you Drill – a guide to well water design: information on where to drill, legal stuff, costs, testing the water, and how to know you have an efficient bore.
  • My Well’s Gone Dry – a guide to well water problems and maintenance: this answers questions like:
  • “I had water yesterday, so where did it go?”
  • “Why my well?” and
  • “If my well is the problem how do I fix it?”

Aquifers fluctuate and well screens get clogged – which problem do you actually have?
