Ruataniwha Water Storage

The Ruataniwha Water Storage project is a long-term sustainable water supply solution for Central Hawke’s Bay.
If approved, the storage dam with a potential capacity of 90million cubic metres, will be the foundation for future economic growth in the region providing certainty of supply for irrigators and other water users.
This project is led by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.

- A revised estimate for the Ruataniwha Water Storage dam is approximately $230 million, including construction and distribution
- The final RWS feasibility report is expected to be tabled with HBRC in August/ September, according to current projections
- Preliminary results from recreation, landscape, noise, traffic and social impact assessments are all positive
- Key milestones over the next three months include:
- Establishing rural zone committees or "pods" to discuss and agree changes to land and water use at a local level
- Assessing the effects of more intensive land use and mitigation activities to counter these
- Identifying the effects on plants and animals (terrestrial and aquatic ecology studies)
- Groundwater and surface water modelling
- National and regional economic impact studies, including the likely changes to our local economy and on-farm costs.

Final reports will be available here, however many reports will not be finalised until near the end of the feasibility study, which is expected in August 2012.
Draft reports are presented to the Ruataniwha Stakeholder Group as they become available - for discussion and feedback - before they are finalised by their authors.

Ruataniwha Leadership Group
The Leadership Group was established to govern and guide the feasibility study. In particular they focus on the market, economic and commercial, environmental, risk and benefit elements of the project. The group has played a vital role in identifying project issues and opportunities to develop water storage and distribution infrastructure, its likely scale, extent and timing.

The Ruataniwha Stakeholder Group advises HBRC and the Leadership Group as to the fit of the project within the community - by assessing social, cultural, water use efficiency and environmental issues, opportunities and solutions. They advise community views and expecattions on water management for all the various uses in the upper Tukituki catchment, specifically on the Ruataniwha Plains. The group includes interested groups and individuals and organisations such as the Department of Conservation, Fish and Game, Hapu and potentially affected landowners.

Overview of Project team
