Progress to Date - Phase 2

Phase 2 - Downstream of Crosses Road Bridge

Progress on Phase Two – Right Bank Downstream of Crosses Road Bridge.

The enhancement works for this section began in March 2008. They began with removal of some undersirable trees and earthworks to improve erosion control, redirect the Karituwhenua Stream confluence and create new wetland areas. Planting was done in June 2008 as part of World Environment Week with 800 people planting almost 5000 plants and additional planting done by the Council.  Some further planting will be done in this area in 2009 to fill in remaining gaps.

The second stage of the Karamu Project looking upstream towards Crosses Road Bridge.  The cows were removed once ground preparation began to make way for native plantings and a walking track.

19 March 2008 - Phase 2 begins!

Phase 2 began with earthworks including realigning the Karituwhenua Stream.  These works will reduce erosion and help improve water quality entering the Karamu Stream as well as creating a new wetland area.

3-7 June 2008 World Environment Week

Council staff, local schools, community groups and community members got together for a week of planting in June.

The weather cleared up just in time for the week to begin and around 800 people planted almost 5000 plants – what a great effort!

Look out for next June's planting season if you would like to join in.

30 July 2008 – First Flood

Yet another flood in July, just after planting. Everything was covered with just some bits poking out in the middle. We hope they do as well as the last plantings in surviving it!  (photo courtesy of the Cawood Family)

19 August 2008  - Post Flood

The plants survived their wee bath and things are looking good.

11 November 2008 - The Battle Begins

Convolvulus and Indian Doab grass are proving to be the weeds to watch on this stage as they attempt to smother everything in their path.  Council have joined forces with KEG and SCHNEHG to keep them at bay. (refer to our community pages for who these groups are).

3 December 2008 – Weeds n Reeds

We’ve had some fantastic growth on Phase 2 so far, especially in some of the natural seeps that have been planted with water tolerant rushes.

 17 December 2008 – More Growth

The Carex sedges have also done really well.

3 February 2009 – Boy! Is It Dry!

After another blue sky Hawke’s Bay day some plants are really struggling.  Weed control has been temporarily put on hold and our resources focused on watering.

4 May 2009 – Still a Long Road Ahead

Most areas on Phase 2 look great due to a lot of maintenance by Council, KEG, SCHNEHG and other community groups.  Other areas have lost a few plants and look barren.  Infill planting is planned for June 2009 to fill these gaps.
