The Karamu Project

This an ambitious and exciting long term project (20yrs+) aimed at improving the flood  management, aesthetic, amenity and ecological values of the Karamu Stream from Pakipaki down to the coast at Clive. 

These pages focus on the stream enhancement works which include revegetation of the stream berms, creation of new habitat, development of a walking track network and increased public access to this great community asset.

The first round of planting for the Karamu Stream Enhancement Project began in May 2007 just south of Havelock North and since then thousands of native sedges, flaxes, shrubs and trees have been planted every year.

Where did it all begin?

In 2004, the Hawke's Bay Regional Council published the report “Te Karamu Catchment Review and Options for Enhancement”. This summarised the findings of a two year review and investigation of the Karamu Stream and catchment.  The review looked at options for improving flood management in the catchment, as well as ways of enhancing the Karamu Stream. This report is available for viewing in hard copy at Napier, Hastings and Havelock North public libraries, the Hastings District Council and at Hawke’s Bay Regional Council in Napier.
