About Hawke's Bay Regional Council
Council's broad responsibilities are the economic, environmental, social and cultural well-being of the community. Our major operational focus is on the environment, managing effects on water, land, air and coastal use while providing opportunities for people to use these resources. Added to that, Council has a leading role in biodiversity and biosecurity, regional economic investment, and in infrastructure like transport and flood management. Our region extends from Mahia in the north, across to the ranges and south as far down as Porangahau.

A region with a vibrant community, a prosperous economy, a clean and healthy environment, now and for future generations
These are the goals the community believes are important for its present and future social, economic, cultural and environmental wellbeing (more detail on these is in the Ten Year Plan, formally known as the Long Term Council Community Plan).
- A prosperous region
- A vibrant community
- A clean and healthy environment
There are many opportunities for Hawke's Bay people to have your say and work with Councillors toward the future of our region and our environment. Hawke's Bay ratepayers contribute to the funding of the Council and its work – so why not think about what you would like us to do and get involved in the planning process?

Council recognises its responsibility of joint stewardship of the Hawke’s Bay environment, together with the community and tangata whenua. Sustainability is at the core of all we do, and means ensuring the wise use of resources to meet the needs of today while ensuring the needs of the future are also provided for. It encompasses environmental, social, cultural and economic wellbeing.
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council will commit to sustainability by ensuring decisions are made after assessing short and long-term risks, both financial and non-financial. Decisions made will recognise the interconnectedness of environmental, social, cultural and economic wellbeing and strive to produce benefits in all areas.
The responsibility for implementing this policy rests with the full Council and all employees.
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council will:
• Meet all applicable legislative requirements
• Take account of the impact on future generations when making decisions
• Prevent adverse effects (including pollution) on the environment or communities
• Require all staff to commit to continuous improvement within their work
To achieve this, Council will annually review our activities to ensure that all significant aspects of our corporate operations will have objectives, targets and programmes aimed at preventing, reducing or mitigating impacts. A summary of this review will be included in the Annual Report.
