Councillors

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has nine representatives elected by the community through the local body elections every three years (The last election was held on 9 October 2010). 

The rural constituencies of Wairoa and Central Hawke’s Bay are represented by one member each, Napier by three members and Hastings by four members.Councillors elect the Chairman at the first Council meeting following a local body election.

Councillors also attend committees and some have chairmanship responsibilities.

Central Hawke's Bay Constituency

 

Councillor Tim Gilbertson.

Tim Gilbertson

Tim Gilbertson has represented the Central Hawke’s Bay constituency since 2007.  He is a farmer at Patangata and has lived in the area for most of his life. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English.  Tim was mayor of Central Hawke’s Bay 2001 – 2007, and Councillor 1995 – 2001.  He has been a Trustee for ECOED since its formation.  Tim has a farming background and is very aware that the Council must focus on the long term benefits of the whole region.

Hastings Constituency

 

Councillor Ewan McGregor.

Ewan McGregor
Deputy Chairman

Ewan has represented the Hastings constituency since 2004. He has a lifelong experience in farming and forestry, is a member of Hastings Landmarks and Chairman of the Landcare Foundation. Ewan is the recipient of a number of environmental awards and does forestry consulting. He is active in several organisations and is promoting nationwide projects involving cabbage tree re-establishment, converting open farm dams to wetlands and silvopastoralism with poplars. His primary interests involve water, urban and rural forestry, and landscape.

Councillor Kevin Rose JP.

Kevin Rose JP
Chairman - Asset Management and Biosecurity Committee

Kevin has represented the Hastings constituency since 1998. Previously an apple grower, he now runs a small horticultural block. He has had experience as a farmer and rural real estate agent. Kevin is involved in many community organisations and the Presbyterian church. He was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in 1997.

Councillor Eileen von Dadelszen JP.

Eileen von Dadelszen JP
Chairman – Environmental Management Committee

Eileen has represented the Hastings constituency since 1995. She is a graduate of Victoria and Auckland Universities, and is a Member of the New Zealand Planning Institute (from which she recently received a Distinguished Service Award) and the New Zealand Institute of Directors. She has participated in governance through appointed or elected membership of a number of national and regional boards and Trusts, as well as through her membership of the Council. Eileen has developed extensive networks throughout the Hawke’s Bay community, specifically through her active participation in not-for profit organisations such as YMCA and the NZ Singing School Trust.

Councillor Liz Remmerswaal.

Liz Remmerswaal

Liz has been a Councillor for the Hastings constituency since 2007. She has a Bachelor of Arts and a background in journalism, broadcasting and community organisations. Liz is deputy chair of the transport committee, a member of the Maori committee and the Environmental Awards working group. She is also Council representative on the Hastings Rotary Pathways group and active with the Karamu Stream care group.

Napier Constituency

 

 Councillor Alan Dick QSO.

Alan Dick QSO
Chairman, Regional Land Transport Committee

Alan represents the Napier constituency, having been elected to the Council in 2004. He was Mayor of Napier for 12 years and formerly served the Regional Council in its inaugural years from 1989 to 1992. Alan has a Business Degree and is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management. He is chairman of the Hawke's Bay Lotteries Distribution Committee and is a former Director of Port of Napier and Radio New Zealand. He has broad experience in the business and community sectors.

Councillor Neil Kirton.

Neil Kirton JP

Neil has represented the Napier constituency since 2001. Neil has been a Member of Parliament from 1996 - 1999, serving as Associate Minister of Health and Minister of Customs. He has a post-graduate degree in Science from Otago University.  Neil has taken a strong interest in the national cycleway project in Hawke's Bay and seeks to greatly strengthen the council's response to river protection during this term of council. He also has a focus on leasehold land issues, which he says need an equitable solution with the most at risk people given a way to deal with rising rentals.

Councillor Christine Scott.

Christine Scott
Chairman – Hearings Committee

Christine has represented the Napier constituency since 2001. She has a degree in Psychology and post-graduate papers in Education. Previously she was a schools’ consultant for a New Zealand educational publishing company. Christine has served on a number of community trusts and chaired the Waiapu Diocesan Finance advisory group. She is currently a director of Anglican Care (Waiapu) Ltd.

Wairoa Constituency

Councillor Fenton Wilson.

Fenton Wilson
Chairman

Fenton has represented the Wairoa constituency since May 2009. Born in Waipukurau and educated in Frasertown, Wairoa and Hastings, Fenton has worked most of his life in the Wairoa district. He farms a 235ha sheep and beef property with wife Sue and is Chairman of the Wairoa Community Development Trust. He also serves on the Smedley Station advisory board.
