Jetski/PWC Registration

How do I register my jetski and how much will it cost?

To register your jetski or other personal water craft, or to transfer the ownership of your jetski, please use the links below.

Registration is a one-off fee of $70 including GST.  This includes the registration sticker.  You can pay with your credit or debit card.

The registration is valid for the use of your jetski throughout New Zealand.

Where do I display the registration sticker?

Registration stickers are like the number plate on your car. They must be clearly displayed on each side of the craft above the water.

Key requirements for displaying your registration:

• The registration must be above the waterline.
• Each number must be at least 90mm high.
• The registration must be clearly legible from 50m away (i.e. contrasting colours and not in the foot well of the vessel).

Rules for using your jetski

Operators should be aware that regulations governing jetski's are the same regulations that govern any power driven vessel. These machines are fast and exciting but need to be handled with care and attention.

Operating a jet ski at speed from the shore is only permitted within the designated Jetski reserved areas in our waters. At all other times the 5 knot rule applies.

Wear a lifejacket

Wear a personal flotation device or lifejacket at all times.

Keep to 5 knots (a fast walking pace / 9.25km per hour) within:

Turn Safely

Turn safely. Apply the throttle to turn. When you throttle off completely you lose steering control.

Water skiing/towing

If you are using your jet ski to tow somebody or something, you must have a second person (an observer) sitting on the back of the your ski and watching the person/item being towed.

Over 15?

You must be 15 years of age to operate a jet ski by yourself. If you're younger than 15, make sure you're on it with an adult who can reach the controls.

Keep in touch

You must carry at least one form of waterproof communication, such as a mobile phone in a dry bag or a waterproof VHF radio. To be safer, it is recommended you carry two forms of communication.  Always report your trip and let someone know where you are going and when you will be back.

Weather check

Always check the weather at least 12 hours before heading out.
