At Hawke’s Bay Regional Council our purpose is to work with our community to protect and manage the region’s precious taonga of rivers, lakes, soils, air, coast and biodiversity for health, wellbeing and connectivity. Our organisation is diverse and our work is varied. Our structure comprises of six key business units; Corporate Services, Integrated Catchment Management, Asset Management, Māori Partnerships, Policy & Regulation, and the Executive Advisory Group which also consists of the Civil Defence and Emergency Management.

 

About the Opportunity:

We are looking for a Senior Scientist – Land to join the Marine, Air and Land Science Team in our Environmental Science Section. The team is part of the Integrated Catchment Management Group and works collaboratively to deliver the science that supports the functions of the group and the Council’s management of regional resources.   

The role of Senior Scientist Land provides both strategic direction and technical analysis, to the management of land activities that impact terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments in Hawke’s Bay.  In addition, the Senior Scientist Land will be responsible for reporting and providing direction/mentoring to more junior team members.

 

About you:

You will have a thorough understanding of environmental processes, particularly the impact of land use on freshwater, coastal and marine environments along with the ability to develop an integrated approach to environmental management at HBRC.

The successful candidate will have:

  • An ability to design, implement and manage the development of targeted investigations for assessment of and management of land use activities on freshwater and marine environments.
  • Knowledge and experience using R, or similar programming language, for data manipulation, statistical computing and graphics.
  • Advanced skills and experience using the ESRI GIS software suite, including strong spatial analysis capabilities.Ability to deliver information and advice with a high level of confidence.
  • A natural ability and enthusiasm to collaborate with other teams to achieve an integrated, ‘mountains to sea’ view of land science.
  • Ability to collate and analyse complex data and interpret the results for technical and non-expert audiences in verbal and written form.
  • Excellent report writing skills, with significant experience and ability in preparation and delivery of reports that meet a diverse range of client requirements.
  • State of Environment reporting.

 

The salary range for this role is $100,000-$110,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience.
