At Hawke’s Bay Regional Council our purpose is to work with our community to protect and manage the region’s precious taonga of rivers, lakes, soils, air, coast and biodiversity for health, wellbeing and connectivity. Our structure comprises of six key business units; Corporate Services, Integrated Catchment Management, Asset Management, Māori Partnerships, Policy & Regulation, and the Executive Advisory Group which also consists of the Civil Defence and Emergency Management.

About the Opportunity:

We are looking for a Nursery Worker to join the Hill Country Erosion Scheme project team on a full-time, fixed term basis (42.5 hours per week) until 30 June 2023.  Based at the Council’s Poplar and Willow Nursery in Pakowhai, the key purpose of the role is to assist the Nursery Overseer with the general day-to-day nursery operations.

Responsibilities will involve work relating to growing 3m poles for the Catchment Management and River teams and providing support with nursery maintenance and security such as:

• Assisting with pole crop management, irrigation, silviculture, including thinning and pruning operations and pole harvest
• Assisting with the monitoring and control of diseases, pests and weeds, including the application of pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers
• Handling and utilising chemicals safely
• Maintenance of tracks, fences and shelterbelts
• Operating various machinery to carry out tasks

About you:

The role would suit someone who enjoys an outdoor working environment and has experience working in a horticultural or nursery setting.

Ideally you will also be/have:

• The ability to work with minimal supervision
• Self-motivated
• Reliable and trustworthy
• Physically fit
• The ability to work with assorted machinery. (Quads, tractors sprayers etc also hand-held tools)
• Grow Safe certification
• A full driver’s license
