Flood infrastructure repairs

There was major damage to the region’s flood infrastructure during Cyclone Gabrielle on 13/14 February 2023. Our stopbanks were both breached in places and weakened in others, drains became blocked with silt and debris. You can follow the progress of our repairs on the map below.

What was damaged?

There were approximately 6km of breaches in our 248 km stopbank network and further parts of the network were damaged by erosion in this unprecedented flooding event.  There was a total of 30 breaches our network.

We have Rapid Repair teams working on all breaches. The immediate focus has been on putting temporary protection in place around breaches which includes bunding (gravel banks) and waterproof plastic wrap.

It will take 6-9 months to bring the stop banks back to pre-Cyclone standards.

Clearing drains

Drain clearing is now complete at the Mission, Waitomo, Awatoto, McLeod, Ericksen, Brookfield, Pākōwhai drains and the Tūtaekurī-Waimate overflow.

Work on clearing drains will continue for next two months. Silt continues to wash into drains so many are requiring to be dug out multiple times.  The Council is planning in the next couple of weeks to fly over drain areas and seed the silt near the drains.  This will help stabilise the drain areas.

Please see the below map for Drain Maintenance Updates.

Repairs to our flood infrastructure map

Our teams are working hard to assess and repair the region’s stopbanks.  The map below shows the progress we are making.  This map will be updated as repairs are made.  All red sections of the stopbanks have temporary repairs in place that should stand up to a 1:5 rain event.  We will be repairing back to at least a 1:100 standard.
