Regional Parks and trails repairs

In the aftermath of the flooding and damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle, our council staff, contractors and emergency services are currently busy working on recovery in and around our Regional Parks, river access points, and cycle trails.

All our regional parks are now open except for Tutira Regional Park.

Tutira Regional Park remains CLOSED to the public for safety reasons. With SH2 just opened we have only now been able to properly assess cyclone damage and get contractors on site to begin the recovery process.

Unfortunately, there has been significant damage to both assets and facilities in the park, including toilets, tracks, access roads, bridges, water lines and fences. Work will be ongoing, and the park will remain closed until further notice.

We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we aim to get the park back open as soon as possible.

River reserves

These are closed to the public while emergency recovery work is done around our rivers.  We will update the public as these re-open.

Trails

Some of the river corridors where our trails normally go are damaged by flooding. 70% of the trails are now rideable. See www.hbtrails.nz for the latest map.

The remaining closed tracks have significant damage due to stopbank damage, roading/trail slips, or destroyed bridges. We are assessing options for the remediation of the most-damaged sections and hope to open the remaining tracks over the coming months,

Open trail sections are:

  • the Tūtaekurī river stopbank between Pettigrew Green Arena and Guppy Road.
  • the concrete sections and coast route from Bayview to Marine Parade to Awatoto to Clive. Note: there will be closures on the Waitangi/Awatoto bridges for repairs at times - keep up to date via   Waka Kotahi Facebook page.
  • Clive to Black Bridge
  • Black Bridge to Clifton, and/or Havelock North
