Check water quality before taking a dip

SWIM HB Today 1

Hawke’s Bay swimmers are encouraged to check water quality results before taking a dip this summer.

Marine, Air and Land Science Team Leader Anna Madarasz-Smith says the Regional Council tests water quality at 39 of the region’s top swim spots to monitor how safe it is for the community to swim.

“We want people to understand what the water quality is like where they swim so everyone can cool off safely during summer,” says Ms Madarasz-Smith.

“Every Monday from November through until the end of March 2022 our water quality team go around the region taking samples from 39 swim spots. They then get analysed with results posted on the LAWA website by the following Wednesday.”

Anyone can check the results on the Regional Council website, or for full site results and information head to LAWA. Heavy rainfall can affect the quality of swim spots, with more sediment and contaminants from drains entering waterways.

"It’s best to stay out of the water for two to three days following heavy rain. The rule of toes is a great one – if you can’t see your toes, it’s probably not a good idea to go for a swim,” says Ms Madarasz-Smith

“We have permanent signage at some of our swim spots that are generally less suitable for swimming, such as Clive River, reminding people to check the water quality before they go for a dip.”

The Regional Council, community groups and landowners are working to improve water quality around the region.
