The supreme winner of the East Coast Ballance Farm Environment Awards will be one of three Hawke’s Bay farms, which have just been announced as finalists.

This annual awards programme is an opportunity to benchmark a farm with other like-minded farmers in the region. The programme is about positive role modelling and looking at the most effective tools to improve farm practices.

“The Awards showcase farmers and farm businesses that demonstrate strong balanced performance across environmental, productive, financial and human aspects of the business, as well as the contribution beyond the farm to the wider community,” says HBRC Catchment Manager Brendan Powell.

This year’s awards dinner takes place at the Napier Conference Centre on Marine Parade on March 20.  Category award winners will be announced, including Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and Gisborne District Council’s jointly sponsored regional award ‘Farming for the Future’.

The finalists cover a range of farming operations -  Frasertown sheep and beef farmers Dave Read and Judy Bogaard; Flemington lamb and beef finishers Watergreen Tourere Partnership, owned by Pete Swinburn and Suzanne Hoyt, and Bruce Isles and Danelle Dinsdale; and at Patoka, dairy farmers Nick and Nicky Dawson from Glenelg (Great Glen Farm Ltd).

The Ballance Farm Environment Awards recognise and celebrate good farm practices which promotes sustainable land management through an annual awards programme that is run in 11 regions throughout New Zealand.
