The Air NZ Marathon Means Busy Hawke’s Bay Trails

marathon

This year the Air New Zealand Hawke’s Bay Marathon makes the most of the Hawke’s Bay Trails that meander through our coastal reserves and river corridors.

The 4th Air New Zealand Hawke’s Bay Marathon is set to hit the streets this Saturday 18 May, with over 5000 participants expected to take part in this popular annual running festival.

Starting at West Quay in Napier, the marathon course will take in road running, waterfront paths and the Hawke's Bay Trails. Over the course of the day, a number of roads will be closed in Napier, Clive, Te Awanga and Havelock North.

While the trails being used for the marathon and half marathon will remain open to recreational users, the event areas will be very busy. If you are not part of the event, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council recommends avoiding the below sections of the trails from 7am to around 2pm.

Hawke’s Bay Trails coordinator, Vicki Butterworth said that while they always encourage users onto the Trails, this would be one day to avoid those particular areas.  ”This could be the perfect opportunity to sample some of the other fabulous rides on the trails such as the Puketapu Loop, or the Water and Winery rides. There are still plenty of the trails unaffected by the marathon.” says Ms Butterworth

The sections of Hawke’s Bay Trails affected by the event will be:
Brookfields Road to Awatoto
Waitangi Regional Park to Pakowhai
Clive to Black Bridge
River Road to Black Bridge
Moore Road to Black Bridge
Black Bridge to Elephant Hill
