New pest hub great tool for locals

Pest hub

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has launched a Pest Hub tool on its website to give easy access to advice on 171 species that are, or have the potential to become, a problem for Hawke’s Bay.

The Pest Hub is an important link between locals and the Regional Council’s biosecurity team, says Acting Team Leader Biosecurity/Biodiversity Alice McNatty.

“The Regional Council oversees pest management in Hawke’s Bay, but we always need help from our community as we can’t do all the work ourselves. We can help people to act with the right tools and knowledge, which is what the Pest Hub is all about.”

The award-winning system was adapted from Northland Regional Council, and allows locals to learn about pests, why they’re causing a problem, and how to deal with them according to Hawke’s Bay’s specific rules.

“You can report locations of pests by dropping a pin on a map, and request more information. Queries made using the Pest Hub will go directly to one of our biosecurity team to follow up,” says Ms McNatty.

“Another benefit of the Pest Hub is that information is accessible from any device, and it’s regularly updated. People can quickly filter through different types of pests, where they’re found, or what type they are.”
