The Regional Councils Environment and Services Committee today adopted the Regulation Group’s revised Enforcement Policy.

According to Compliance Manager Wayne Wright, this updated policy helps to give public assurance of the Council’s course of action and decision-making process when investigating and enforcing environmental non-compliance.

“This is a further step toward a stronger regulatory position being taken by the Regional Council,” says Mr Wright.

“The policy also now reflects the Council’s intent to encourage positive behaviour change and to ensure the highest levels of compliance on environmental matters,” adds Mr Wright.

Councillors voted unanimously in support of updated Enforcement Policy.

“This policy is at the heart of our reputation and supports public input. This helps us all to monitor our environment, so that we can ensure compliance and deliver enforcement,” says Cr Belford.

The policy outlines principles and guidelines that include transparency, fairness, consistency, accountability, a lawful and ethical approach, targeted compliance, and responsive and effective enforcement solutions.

The policy document will be a valuable reference tool to members of the public, Council staff and Councillors and will be published on the Regional Council website.
