State of the EnvironmentTe oranga o te taiao

We gather data from the Regional Council environmental monitoring projects and report trends monthly, annually and five yearly.

Toitū te marae a Tāne, Toitū te marae a Tangaroa, Toitū te tangata. If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive.

State of the environment reporting

Our environment is our precious taonga. It underpins all the values that we hold for our health, our wellbeing, and our physical and spiritual needs.

To ensure that these resources stay healthy for years to come, we need to understand the current health of our land, rivers, lakes, and beaches – and how climate change and human use will affect them in the future.

What we do

At the Regional Council we have a team of technical and analytical specialists that collect environmental information. We have over twenty scientists who then use this information to gain important insights on the health of our natural environment and the processes that drive change in these systems.

Our state of the environment report is our 3-yearly check in on the condition of our waters, land, air and coast, that supports our unique and valuable biodiversity. It highlights where things are going well, and where things may need more support.

The science of our natural resources underpins how we manage them moving forward, in a way that ensures that they are still healthy and functioning for generations to come.
