GoBay buses across Napier and Hastings will be free this weekend, from Friday April 17 to Sunday April 19, to celebrate World Public Transport Day.
For three days, people can hop on any GoBay bus at no cost, offering an easy way to try public transport, save on fuel, and enjoy stress-free travel without needing to drive.
Regional Transport Committee Chair Neil Kirton says the free weekend is about encouraging people to experience how easy public transport is to use. No payment or Bee Card is required during the promotion, and passengers can simply hop on and go.
“Public transport plays an important role in connecting our communities in and between Napier and Hastings. This free weekend removes barriers and makes it even easier for people to give it a go,” says Mr Kirton.
“With fuel costs remaining high, many people are looking for different ways to travel.”
Using public transport can help people reduce fuel and parking costs, ease congestion on roads, and lower carbon emissions.
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Transport Manager Russell Turnbull says World Public Transport Day recognises the value of public transport services that keep people moving.
“It connects all of us to our jobs, study, and closer to the things and people we care about,” he says.
“Since the new network relaunch in January, we have already seen more people using the bus. This free weekend is a great way to build on that momentum and for even more people to get on board. It’s also a great opportunity to celebrate our wonderful bus drivers. They are a vital part of the service every day. Don’t forget to give them a big thank you as you hop off the bus.”
