Time series data from the regional council is available as open data, and processing codes, metadata and descriptions are found here.
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Time Series Data is available below. Details of the methods of obtaining data from this service are contained in the document Hilltop Server (Web Service).
These data services are continually being refined and improved. More information and data is being made available through them each day.
All data should be treated as raw and care needs to be taken when using the data as it may have been obtained for specific purposes and be unsuitable for, or of limited use for other purposes. HBRC are working to provide additional metadata to improve data interpretation. This is an ongoing project and will take time to complete.
All data that is available via web services is provided as XML data. XML can be read and displayed by spreadsheet programs, or scripts can be written to automate and aggregate the process. Some code may be available on services such as GitHub, for time series data search for ‘Hilltop’ and then select the scripting language you are interested in.
Some example requests are described in the “Working Examples” document.
HBRC requests that anyone developing a useful application from this data to share a link with us. We’d like to see how this data is used.
Additional Site metadata for some sites is available from the LAWA Monitoring Sites Reference Data web service on the GIS Open Data portal.
The raw xml is available here.
Additional metadata is available for the Water Quality samples by performing a second request, but with the Measurement set to WQ Sample. An overview of the HBRC Water Quality metadata is provided here.
Project Codes are described here:
Some of the time series information has been quality coded to flag its fitness for purpose. This information is provided as a number code in the Quality Code tag available via Hilltop requests. For simple time series information a separate request is required to obtain the quality code information, for Water Quality data the quality code is associated with the data. Where available, NEMS standards have been used for quality coding. However these do not exist for all measurements, and they have only been in existence for a few years. Other quality codes associated with the data are:
Hydrology Processing Codes

Water Quality Processing Codes
Water quality data has been quality coded according to a draft NEMS standard issued in 2014. An overview of the schema is provided here. The codes mimic the NEMS standards codes.
