Archives Central

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council archives are stored at the Archives Central building at 40 Bowen Street, Feilding and listings are available on line to make these more accessible to the public.

The collection includes records of Catchment Boards, Pest Destruction Boards, Noxious Plant Authorities, the United Council, Rabbit Boards and River Boards that operated within Hawke’s Bay from 1877-1989.  The types of records include: minute books and other meeting papers, correspondence files, accounts and financial records.

GIS Open Data

Geographical Information System (GIS) Open Data site provides access to Council’s spatial data. GIS data stores the location of features and associated attributes. Search and download entire or filtered datasets in a variety of formats.

Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (LAWA) shares environmental data and information. Initially a collaboration between New Zealand’s 16 regional councils and unitary authorities, LAWA is now a partnership between the Te Uru Kahika - Regional and Unitary Councils Aotearoa, Cawthron Institute, the Ministry for the Environment, the Department of Conservation, Stats NZ and has been supported by the Tindall Foundation and Massey University.

Retrolens is a resource for decision making, complying with regulatory requirements and cultural heritage.  the Regional Council joined the Historic Archive Imagery Scanning Project in 2015 to develop Retrolens, which is a collaboration between a number of councils and central government to preserve and digitise more than 500,000 historic aerial photo negatives, dating back to the 1930s. So far it contains more than 8,000 Hawke’s Bay images, and around 32,000 will be available by 2021.

The images are available for download and released under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 NZ. 


Time Series

the Regional Council makes data available to developers, consultants, academics and researchers. Care needs to be taken when using this data as it may have been obtained for specific purposes and be unsuitable for, or of limited use for other purposes.  the Regional Council is working to provide additional metadata to improve data interpretation, but this is an ongoing project and will take time to complete.
