At Hawke’s Bay Regional Council (“HBRC”) our purpose is to work with our community to protect and manage the region’s precious taonga of rivers, lakes, soils, air, coast and biodiversity for health, wellbeing and connectivity. Our organisation is diverse and our work is varied. Our structure comprises of six key business units; Corporate Services, Integrated Catchment Management, Asset Management, Māori Partnerships, Policy & Regulation, and the Executive Advisory Group which also consists of the Civil Defence and Emergency Management.

 

About the Opportunity:

Our Finance Team is navigating through a period of change and growth and we are looking for a dedicated Financial Accountant to join the team in this newly created role. The Finance Team is responsible for the delivery of all facets of the HBRC finance function and strategic advice to the wider Council and senior management. 

Reporting to the Senior Group Accountant, the Financial Accountant will be responsible for a wide range of financial accounting tasks, including but not limited to – 

  • Assisting with financial reporting to Council and Management, including preparation of financial statements and reconciliation of various balance sheet control accounts
  • Maintaining the asset database within the general ledger
  • Processing monthly GST returns, quarterly FBT returns and Statistical returns
  • Preparing annual Income tax returns for sign off by Senior Group Accountant
  • Maintaining oversight, reviewing and monitoring bank reconciliations prepared by transactional team
  • Financial review of fortnightly payroll, including providing advice and support to the payroll function regarding taxation and other legislative requirement

 

About you:

In addition to being a team player and demonstrating a self-motivated can-do attitude, ideally you will also have: 

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent accounting tertiary qualification, with a CA qualification or progressing towards CA qualification being an advantage
  • Previous experience in a financial accounting position with demonstrable knowledge of taxation and accounting standards
  • Experience with the preparation of annual reports and other statutory returns such as GST, FBT etc
  • Experience in working with financial reporting systems and requirements
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, including intermediate to advanced MS Excel skills
