About the Opportunity:

The Regional Assets team is part of our Asset Management Group. This Group looks after a diverse portfolio of river and coastal engineering, flood scheme operations and maintenance, and the regional park network across the Hawke’s Bay.

The team is looking for an experienced Design Engineer who can hit the ground running and help deliver on our busy programme of work. We need someone who is proactive, solutions-focused and has a passion for our environment. This is an exciting opportunity to get into the engineering space with Council while being part of a passionate team working in a diverse environment. We have a large portfolio of work and some big projects to achieve in the next few years within the Hawke’s Bay region. There will be plenty of coaching and support to grow your skills and knowledge under the guidance of your peers and leaders. 

The key objectives of the role are to: 

  • Support the development of engineering designs for flood control and drainage infrastructure to a high professional standard.
  • Ensure the ecological, cultural, and recreational values associated with any projects are effectively considered
  • Ensure required waterway and flood modelling is completed effectively and efficiently.
  • Acknowledge and respond to requests for engineering input into a range of other Council work.

About you:

You will be able to remain calm under pressure, pick up systems with ease, and able to juggle multiple tasks on the go.  You will also be a great communicator who gets along with a wide variety of people from a diverse range of backgrounds. 

In addition to the above you will also:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent tertiary qualification.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (or in the process of acquiring)
  • Sound understanding of the following legislation: Resource Management Act, Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Act, Local Government Act, Reserves Act, Public Works Act
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to initiate and engage effectively at all levels, internally and externally.
  • Competency in a range of computer applications and engineering specific software.
  • 5-10 years’ experience in engineering aspects of local government, utility or engineering consultancy organisation. Engineering in natural resources is desirable.

The salary range for this role will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
