Team Leader Compliance - Urban and Industrial

About the Opportunity:

This is an integral role within our Regulatory group that ensures the effective day to day management of compliance activities within the urban and industrial sector of the Hawke’s Bay region, including the monitoring of territorial local authorities three water consents. A key part of the work will be educating stakeholders on good environmental practice to help support the improvement of environment outcomes and reduce non-compliance activities. Alongside this, as a Team Leader you will guide, coach and develop the team of four Environmental Officers, ensuring team objectives are met, clear direction is provided and best practice is achieved.

It is expected that you will also:

  • Inspect and report on the level of compliance with resource consent conditions and regional rules.
  • Carry out compliance monitoring with an emphasis on (but not limited to) significant activities and industries, including local authorities three waters.
  • Provide and coordinate team input into policy development and other projects to assist Council in fulfilling its requirements under the Resource Management Act, Local Government Act 2002 and any other relevant legislation.
  • Provide the team with consistent, reliable leadership, regular feedback, facilitate a positive team culture, mentoring and any relevant professional development.

About you:

You will be a motivated individual with proven leadership experience who can take a team in a positive future direction, adapting and growing along the way. You will have knowledge, experience or qualifications in either urban stormwater management or municipal wastewater treatment disposal. An ability to remain calm under pressure and experience in conflict resolution and negotiation would be an advantage in this role given the nature of the work involved.

Ideally you will also have:

  • a minimum of seven years regulatory experience in resource management compliance processes, auditing, or related fields.
  • A relevant tertiary degree in Science, Law, Environmental Resource Management or suitable equivalent experience.
  • An understanding of the compliance process within Local Government and an ability to interpret legislation and follow processes.
  • Effective inter-personal skills and experience in dealing with a wide range of situations, people and organisations.

The salary range for this role will  depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
