“It’s made a huge difference for us” – Sustainable Homes

SustainableHomesStory July2022

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is helping warm homes with its Sustainable Homes programme.

Jeremy Strampel’s home was cold, damp and full of condensation before he had a heat pump and ventilation system put in.

”We had real problems with crying windows here and it actually cost us a fortune because we had to redo all our windowsills and curtains which had rotted due to excessive mould and condensation,” says Jeremy.

“The kids would get sick every winter and my wife would be sick all winter, every winter. I thought that was just how it was. But apparently it’s not. Since having it installed, our home is much warmer and we haven't had any condensation, dampness or sickness."

Jeremy said he heard about Sustainable Homes through Facebook and looked into it. “It’s made a huge difference for us. I recommend it – I’ve been telling everyone I know!”

Regional Council Procurement Manager Mark Heaney says the Sustainable Homes programme is about improving health and wellness for Hawke’s Bay homes.

“Having a warm home has such a positive impact on the people who live in them and we want everyone to live in warm, healthy homes”, says Mark.

All eligible ratepayers can borrow up to $20,000 from the regional council. This is repaid over ten years by way of a voluntary targeted rate. The rate is not a loan and interest rates vary depending on the product and where you live.
