Environmental Monitoring Officer – Water Quality and Ecology (fixed term)

 About the Opportunity:

We are looking for an Environmental Monitoring Assistant (fixed term) to join the Environmental Information team. This team gathers information to help understand changes in the health of freshwater and coastal ecosystems and identify the main threats to humans, animals or life in the water.

About the role:

  • Fixed-term role for 21 months
  • The role is full-time, with a salary of $60,000

The role is a combination of field work and office-based responsibilities for a variety of water quality improvement projects. You will be responsible for tasks such as:

-        Water quality monitoring, field assessments and data collection, sanitary/faecal source investigations of freshwater sites and GIS spatial analysis.

-        Day to day programme management, inspections/investigations, sampling, record keeping, database entries and collation of information.

-        Equipment and logger use, maintenance and calibration.

-        Use of digital software, GIS and scientific databases for data collection, processing and archiving.

About you:

The position would suit a highly motivated and technically minded individual, with a passion for the freshwater environment who is keen to apply their skills in a varied role.

The successful candidate will have a relevant tertiary qualification, a full NZ drivers licence and willingness to work alone in the field and around water.  

Ideally you will also have:

  • Previous experience with field-based investigations.
  • Physically fit and enjoy working in and around water
  • A positive, hard-working attitude.
  • Competency driving a 4WD and manual transmission vehicle. 
  • Experience with environmental equipment and data management processes.
