About The opportunity | Ko te āheinga:

Our Water Quality & Ecology team is a critical function of Council, gathering information to help us better understand any changes to the health of local freshwater and coastal ecosystems. The data is used to help identify the main threats to humans, animals, or life in the water and offers a diverse and interesting workload. We need an Environmental Science Technician to join our team!

This varied role will have no two days exactly the same, with a combination of field work and office-based responsibilities including:   

  • River, lake, estuary and coastal water quality and ecology monitoring.     
  • The installation, maintenance and calibration of monitoring equipment and logger.
  • Application of your technical knowledge and scientific expertise to ensure monitoring programmes run effectively and to the required standards.

About you | E pā ana ki a koe:

This position would suit a highly motivated and technically minded individual, with a passion for the freshwater and marine environment who is keen to apply their skills in a varied and primarily field-based role. The successful candidate will have a relevant tertiary qualification, a full NZ drivers’ license and a willingness to work alone in the field, plus lots of confidence with water.  

Ideally you will also have: 

  • Previous experience with field-based investigations, working around water and on boats.
  • A positive, hard-working attitude where you take initiative and act proactively.
  • Competency driving a 4WD would be beneficial. 
  • Experience with freshwater and marine monitoring techniques, environmental equipment and statistical knowledge.

The salary range for this role is between $69,750 to $77,500 and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
