Come home safe this summer

With summer ramping up and more people taking to the water, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has issued a reminder for recreational water users: prepare your gear, know the rules, and come home safe.

Hawke’s Bay’s Harbourmaster Captain Martin Moore says having a memorable summer on the water includes being a responsible skipper and prioritising the safety of those on board.

“With high temperatures forecast for this summer, we’re expecting an increase in boaties heading out. Our message to them is make sure your boat is safe and water-ready before you leave home. Have the right gear ready to go and put a plan in place to help get you out of a dangerous situation if something goes wrong.”

Captain Moore says, “Whether you’re out on a fishing trip, kayaking or jet skiing, make sure everyone heads out wearing a properly fitted lifejacket. It’s important to remember lifejackets aren’t just for children or newbies and most accidents happen without warning. Having a lifejacket on can make the difference between life or death.”

“Summer weather can also be a little unpredictable in Hawke’s Bay, so keep your eye on the marine forecast.  Take two forms of communication with you that suits your planned activity. This could be a radio, or phone in a waterproof pouch. It would also be great to have a personal locator beacon (PLB) with you.”

“Always let your whānau know about your trip and key information like when and where you’re going.”

The Harbourmaster team will be out on the water and at boat ramps around Hawke’s Bay, to meet all water users and ensure that they are operating safely on the water.
